SORANUS, Famous Greek physician and medical author born in Ephesus, of uncertain dates (fl.? c. 80-110). He practiced in Alexandria and subsequently in Rome during the reigns of Trajan and Hadrian, and was one of the chief representatives of the “Methodic” school of medicine. Several of his writings survive, notably his four-volume treatise On Gynaecology, On the Signs of Fractures, on Tissues, The Life of Hippocrates, and a Latin translation of On Acute and Chronic Diseases. He was respected and praised by several Christian authors, most notably Augustine, who calls him “Medicinae auctor nobilissimus,” (Cont. Julian, v. 51)  and Tertullian, for whom Soranus is “Methodicae Medicinae instructissimus auctor.” (De Anima, c. 6).
