Chapter House, Rievaulx Abbey

St. Aelred, Medieval illum. MS.

BORN in 1110 Aelred was educated at Durham, and invited to the court of the youthful King David of Scotland as seneschal, or steward.  In 1122 the Cistercian abbey of Rievaulx had been founded in Northumbria, just north of the present Ampleforth Abbey and school; and in 1134 at the age of 24 Aelred joined Rievaulx under Abbot William, a disciple of St. Bernard.

IN 1143 Aelred was made novicemaster, and the following year he was made Abbot of nearby Revesby.  In 1147 he became Abbot Rievaulx, which he ruled until his death in 1167.
