CATHOLIC intellectual renewal in the nineteenth century arose in the wake of the devastation wrought by the French Revolution.  The burning question was whether the “.new revolutionary” practices meditated by Enlightenment philosophers and violently imposed by Napoleon's forces could be accommodated in new, more benign political structures congenial to Catholicism, or whether they had to be be resolutely opposed.
