14. THE demon of pride conducts the soul to its worst fall. It urges it:   ιδ' (14) Ὁ τῆς ὑπερηφανίας δαίμων χαλεπωτάτης πτώσεως τῇ ψυχῇ πρόξενος γίνεται·

[1] not to admit God’s help

[2] and to believe that the soul is responsible for its own achievements,

[3] and to disdain the brethren as fools because they do not all see this about it.

ἀναπείθει γὰρ αὐτὴν Θεὸν μὲν μὴ ὁμολογεῖν βοηθόν͵

ἑαυτὴν δὲ τῶν κατορθουμένων αἰτίαν εἶναι νομίζειν

καὶ φυσιοῦσθαι κατὰ τῶν ἀδελφῶν ὡς ἀνοήτων͵ διότι μὴ τοῦτο περὶ αὐτῆς πάντες ἐπίστανται.

This demon is followed by: Παρακολουθεῖ δὲ ταύτῃ

[1] anger and

[2] sadness and the final evil,

[3] utter insanity and madness, and visions of mobs of demons in the air.

ὀργὴ καὶ

λύπη͵ καὶ τὸ τελευταῖον κακόν͵

ἔκστασις φρενῶν καὶ μανία καὶ δαιμόνων ἐν τῷ ἀέρι πλῆθος ὁρώμενον.

 

 

   

 

 

33.  RECALL your former life and your old transgressions, and how when you were subject to passions you crossed over to apatheia by the mercy of Christ; and how you then left the world that had humiliated you so often and in so many ways.

  λγ'  Μέμνησο τοῦ προτέρου σου βίου καὶ ἀρχαίων παραπτωμάτων, καὶ πῶς ἐμπαθὴς ὢν ἐλέει Χριστοῦ πρὸς τὴν ἀπάθειαν μεταβέβηκας, καὶ πῶς πάλιν ἐξῆλθες τοῦ κόσμου τοῦ πολλὰ καὶ πολλάκις σε ταπεινώσαντος. 

 

 

   

 

 

57.  TWO in number are the souls peaceful states: νζʹ   Δύο τῆς ψυχῆς εἰρηνικαὶ καταστάσεις εἰσί͵

[A] the first grows from natural seeds;

[B] while the other is engendered by the withdrawal of the demons

μία μὲν ἡ ἀπὸ τῶν φυσικῶν σπερμάτων ἀναδιδομένη͵ ἑτέρα δὲ ἡ ἐξ ὑποχωρήσεως τῶν δαιμόνων ἐπιγινομένη·
 [A] From the first there follow: καὶ τῇ μὲν προτέρᾳ ἀκολουθεῖ

[1] humility, with

[2] compunction, and

[3] tears, and

[4] limitless longing (pothos) for God, and

[5] immeasurable eagerness for [our assigned] task.

 ταπεινοφροσύνη μετὰ

 κατανύξεως͵ καὶ

δάκρυον καὶ

πόθος πρὸς τὸ θεῖον ἄπειρος͵

καὶ σπουδὴ περὶ τὸ ἔργον ἀμέτρητος·

 [B] From the second [arise] τῇ δὲ δευτέρᾳ

[1] vainglory with

[2] pride,

κενοδοξία μετὰ

ὑπερηφανίας

which capture the monk when the other demons go away.

ἐν ἀναιρέσει τῶν λοιπῶν δαιμόνων τὸν μοναχὸν ὑποσύρουσα.

One who perceives the beginnings of the first [peaceful] state will be even more sharply aware of the attacks of the demons

Ὁ τοίνυν τηρῶν τὰ ὅρια τῆς προτέρας καταστάσεως͵ τὰς ἐπιδρομὰς τῶν δαιμόνων ὀξύτερον ἐπιγνώσεται.

 

 

   

 

 

89. OF three parts does the rational soul consist, according to our wise teacher: 89 (πθʹ) Τριμεροῦς δὲ τῆς λογιχῆς ψυχῆς ὄυσης, κατὰ τὸν σοφὸν ἡμῶν διδάσκαλον·

[1] When it in the RATIONAL part that virtue comes into being it is called
[
1a] prudence and
[1b] understanding and
[
1c] wisdom;

ὅταν μὲν ἐν τῷ λογιστικῷ μέρει γένηται ἡ ἀρετή, καλεῖται
 
φρόνησις καὶ
σύνεσις καὶ
σοφία.

[2] in the CONCUPISCIBLE part,
[2a] temperance and
[2b] charity and
[
2c] self-control;

ὄταν δὲ ἐν τῷ ἐπιθυμητικῷ,
 
σωφροσύνη καὶ
ἀγάπη καὶ
ἐγκράτεια.

[3] in the IRASCIBLE part,
[
3a] courage and
[
3b] patience.

ὅταν δὲ ἐν τῷ θυμικῷ,
ἀνδρεία καὶ
ὑπομονή·

[4] But in the WHOLE of the SOUL [it] is justice.

ἐν ὅλῇ δὲ τῇ ψυχῇ, δικαιοσύνη

[1A] Now the task of PRUDENCE is

Καὶ φρονήσεως μὲν ἔργον

[1A.1] to plan the attack against the opposing powers and

[1A.2] to defend the virtues,

[1A.3] to stand prepared against the vices,

[1A.4] and to administer neutral matters according to the [requirements of the] times.

τὸ στρατηγεῖν πρὸς τὰς ἀντικειμένας δυνάμεἱς,

καὶ τῶν μὲν ἀρετῶν ὑπερασπίζειν,

 πρὸς δὲ τὰς κακίας παρατάττεσθαι,

τὰ δὲ μέσα πρὸς τοὺς καιροὺς διοικεῖν·

[1B] [The task] of UNDERSTANDING: to direct harmoniously all things which help us toward our goal.

συνέσεως δὲ τὸ πάντα τὰ συντελοῦντα ἡμῖν πρὸς τὸν σκοπὸν ἁρμοδίως οἰκονομεῖν·

[1C] [The task] of WISDOM: contemplation of the logoi of corporeal and incorporeal beings.

σοφίας δὲ τὸ θεωρεῖν λόγους σωμάτων καὶ ἀσωμάτων·

[2A] The work of TEMPERANCE: to look serenely upon those affairs which provoke within us irrational phantasies.

σωφροσύνης δὲ ἔργον τὸ βλέπειν ἀπαθῶς τὰ πράγματα τὰ κινοῦντα ἐν ἡμῖν φαντασίας ἀλόγους·

[2B] of CHARITY: all the images of God, showing one another to be as nearly like the prototype as possible no matter how the demons ply their arts to defile them.

ἀγάπης δὲ τὸ πάσῃ εἰκόνι τοῦ θεοῦ τοιαύτην ἑαυτὴν ἐμπαρέχειν οἵαν καὶ τῷ πρωτοτύπῳ σχεδόν, κἂν μιαίνειν αὐτὰς επιχειρῶσιν οἱ δαίμονες·

[2c] Of CONTINENCE: every pleasure of the palate with joy to decline.

ἐγκρατείας δὲ τὸ πᾶσαν ἡδονὴν τοῦ φάρυγγος μετὰ χαρᾶς ἀποσείσθαι·

[3A] Not to fear the enemies and

μὴ δεδιέναι δὲ τοὺς πολεμίους

[3B] eagerly to endure afflictions belongs to COURAGE and PATIENCE.

καὶ προθύμως ἐγκρατερεῖν τοῖς δεινοῖς τῆς ὑπομονῆς καὶ τῆς ἀνδρείας ἐστί·

 

 

[4] JUSTICE effects a certain symphony and harmony among the [different] parts of the soul.

δικαιοσύνης δὲ τὸ συμφωνίαν τινὰ καὶ ἁρμονίαν τῶν τῆς ψυχῆς μερῶν κατεργάζεσθαι.

90. THE fruit of sowing is sheaves, and the fruit of the virtues is knowledge And as tears accompany sowing, so joy accompanies reaping (Ps 125:6)

2. from On Various Tempting Thoughts


 

23A solitary should never withdraw into solitude [burdened] with anger or gloominess, nor flee from the brethren while perplexed by these [tempting-]thoughts. For madness can arise from such passions as these: when the heart shifts from one [contemplative] insight to another, from this to that, from still another [insight] to yet another one, it [thus] tumbles by stages into the pit of amnesia.  [SC,p.232] 23.  Μηδεὶς τῶν ἀναχωρούντων μετ' ὀργης ἢ λύπης ἀναχωρείτω, μηδὲ φευγέτω τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ὑπὸ τῶν τοιούτων λογισμῶν ἐνοχλούμενος.  Γίνονται γὰρ καὶ ἐκστάσεις καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν τοιούτων παθῶν τῆς καρδίας, ἀπὸ νοήματος εἰς νόημα, καὶ ἀπὸ τούτου ἐφ' ἕτερον, καὶ  απ' ἐκείνου ἐπ' ἄλλο, κατὰ μικρὸν ἐμπιπτούσης εἰς πάραθρον λήθης. 
However, we have known many brothers who fell victim to this shipwreck but were brought back again to human life through the tears and prayers of the other [brethren]. Πολλοὺς γὰρ ἔγνωμεν τῶν ἀδελφῶν περιπεσόντας τούτῷ τῷ ναυαγιῳ, οὓς οἱ λεπτοὶ μετὰ δακρύων καὶ προσευχῆς, αὖθις εἰς τὸν ἀνθρώπινον ἐπανήγαγον βίον. 
But there are others who drifted unawares into a fixed amnesia and have lost the strength to maintain their former state; and to this day we, the humble, behold our shipwrecked brethren. Τινὲς δὲ καὶ ἀνεπάνακτον λήθην λαθόντες, οὐκ ἔτι ἴσχυσαν καταλαβεῖν τὴν πρώτην κατάστασιν, καὶ μέχρι τῆς σήμερον ἡμεῖς οἱ ταπεινοὶ βλέπομεν τὰ τῶν ἀδελφῶν ἡμῶν ναυάγια·
This particular calamity chiefly befalls one as a consequence of the [tempting-] thought of pride. τοῦτο δὲ τὸ πάθος ὡς ἐπὶ τὸ πλεῖστον ἀπὸ τῶν τῆς ὑπερηφανίας συμβαίνει λογισμῶν.
When someone withdraws into solitude while in this state [of pride]: first, he perceives the air of his cell burning; then nocturnal flashes of lightning illuminate the walls; voices are [next heard], both of those giving chase and of their victims, while ethereal forms of horse-drawn chariots appear; [finally,] Ethiopians fill the house, and chaos ensues.  And [at last], overwhelmed by terror he descends into madness, succumbing to megalomania; and through fear he forgets his [merely] human state.  Ὅταν δέ τις ἀναχωρεῖ τοιαύτην ἔχων κατάστασιν, πρῶτον μὲν ὁρᾷ τὸν τῆς κέλλης ἀέρα διάπυρον, καὶ ἀστραπὰς τινὰς νύκτωρ ἐκλαμπρούσας περὶ τοὺς τοίχους· ἔπειτα φωνὰς διωκόντων καὶ διωκομένων, καὶ ἅρματα σύν ἵπποις κατὰ τὸν ἀέρα τυπούμενα, καὶ τὸν οἶκον ὅλον πεπληρωμένον Αἰθιόπων καὶ ταραχῆς.  Καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς ὑπερβαλλούσης δειλίας ἐκστάσει λοιπὸν περιπίπτει καὶ μετέωρος γίνεται, καὶ τῆς ἀνθρωπίνης ἀπὸ τοῦ φόβου ἐπιλανθάνεται καταστάσεως. 
This is why it [especially] behooves us to undertake the solitary life [only] with great humility and gentleness.  And we should console the soul of this afflicted person with spiritual words, saying to him the words of holy David: Διὸ ἀνάγκη μετὰ πολλῆς ταπεινοφροσύνης ἀναχωρεῖ καὶ πραΰτητος, καὶ λόγοις πνευματικοῖς παρακαλεῖν τὴν ψυχὴν τούτου καὶ τὰ τοὺ ἁγίου Δαυὶδ φθέγγεσθαι πρὸς αὐτὴν· ̧

Bless the Lord,  my soul,

never forget all his rewards,

who has compassion on your misdeeds,

who heals all your diseases,

who redeems your life from corruption,

who crowns you with mercies and compassion.
 
(Ps. 102: 2-4).

Εὐλόγει ἡ ψυχή μου τὸν Κύριον, καὶ μὴ ἐπιλανθάνου πάσας τὰς ἀνταποδόσεις αὐτοῦ·

τὸν εὐιλατεύοντα πάσαις ταῖς ἀνομίαις σου, τὸν ἰώμενον πάσας τὰς νόσους σου·

τὸν λυτρούμενον ἐκ φθορᾶς τὴν ζωήν σου, τὸν στεφανοῦντά σε ἐν ἐλέει καὶ οἰκτιρμοῖςς. [Ps 102.2-4] 

These, then, are the type of words you should speak to this person, like a mother at festival seeking diligently for her child out of fear that some evil-doer seize him and carry him away. 

   [p48] Ταῦτα καὶ τὰ τοιαῦτα φθέγγου πρὸς αὐτὴν· καθάπερ μήτηρ ἐν πανηγύρει τὸ ἴδιον παιδίον ἐπιζητοῦσα πυκνότερον, μὴ τις αὐτὸ τῶν κακούργων ἁρπάσας ἀπέλθῃ·

But above all else we should, through earnest prayer, constantly invite him back to the Lord. μάλιστα δὲ διὰ συντόνου προσευχῆς ἀεὶ καλεῖ τὴν ψυχὴν πρὸς τὸν Κύριον· -

8.1. For the proud [tempting-]thought that say to me: “I am the holy one of the Lord!”:

γενες. 1.  προς λογισμον υπερηφ. λεγοντα μοι οτι εγω ο αγιος του κυριου 

+ Gen 3:14  The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all cattle, and above all wild animals; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life”.

+ Γεν 3·14 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος ὁ θεὸς τῷ ὄφει ῞οτι ἐποίησας τοῦτο͵ ἐπικατάρατος σὺ ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν κτηνῶν καὶ ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν θηρίων τῆς γῆς· ἐπὶ τῷ στήθει σου καὶ τῇ κοιλίᾳ πορεύσῃ καὶ γῆν φάγῃ πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας τῆς ζωῆς σου.

 

 

8.2. For the proud [tempting-]thought that glorifies me and lifts me to the heights, imagining that I am pure, never welcoming vile thoughts:

ͅ72ββ  2.  προς λογ. υπερηφ δοξαζοντα με και εις υψος επαιροντα ως καθαρον ουκετι λογισμους μιαρους δεχομενον

+ Gen 18:27  Abraham answered, “Behold, I have taken upon myself to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes.”

8.3. Against the blasphemous [tempting-]thought that denies God, feeding me and cheating the angel that helps me:

3.  προς λογισμον βλασθημον αρνουμενον θεον με τρεφοντα και αδικουντα {συκοφαντουντα} τον αγγελον τον μοι βοηθουντα

+ Gen 48:15  And he blessed Joseph, and said, “The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has led me all my life long to this day, the angel who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and in them let my name be perpetuated, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.

8.4. For the soul that wishes to discover the speech of the proud demons that observe us searching out spiritual concepts:

εξοδ. 4.  προς ψυχην θελουσαν μαθειν τι λεγουσιν οι υπερηφανοι δαιμονες οταν ιδωσιν ημας υποθεσεις πνευματικας ερευνωντας

+ Exo 5:9  Let heavier work be laid upon the men that they may labor at it and pay no regard to lying words.

+ Εχ 5·9 βα ρυνέσθω τὰ ἔργα τῶν ἀνθρώπων τούτων͵ καὶ μεριμνάτωσαν ταῦ τα καὶ μὴ μεριμνάτωσαν ἐν λόγοις κενοῖς.

 

 

8.22. For the Lord, because of the [tempting-]thought of pride denying that victory comes from the Lord:

εζρα. 22.   εις κυριον περι λογισμου υπερηφανιας την νικην παρα θεου αρνουμενου

+ 1 Esdras  4:59 f.  From you is the victory; from you is wisdom, and yours is the glory. I am your servant. Blessed are you, who havegiven me wisdom; I give you thanks, O Lord of our fathers.”

8.23. For a Lord because of the blasphemous [tempting-]thought persisting within us:

δαυιδ. 23. εις κυριον περι βλασφημων λογισμων εν ημιν εμμειναντων

+ Ps 7:2f  O Lord my God, in thee have I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me.

+ Πσ 7·2φ Κύριε ὁ θεός μου͵ ἐπὶ σοὶ ἤλπισα· σῶσόν με ἐκ πάντων τῶν διωκόντων με καὶ ῥῦσαί με͵

 

 

8.24 For a Lord on account of the demon of pride drawing near to us, which often appears in the form of an angel of light, having with it many strong demons: 

24. εις ͅ74ββ κυριον περι δαιμονος υπερηφανιας ημιν εγγισαντος· ος πολλακις εν ειδει αγγελου φωτος φαινεται πολλην ισχυν δαιμονων μεθ´ αυτου εχων

+ Ps 35:12   Do not let the foot of pride come against me, and do not let the hand of sinners move me.

+ ψ 35,12.   μὴ ἐλθέτω μοι ποὺς ὑπερηφανίας,    καὶ χεὶρ ἁμαρτωλῶν μὴ σαλεύσαι με.

 

 

8.25  To the Lord, because of the thought of pride that denies the help of God and attributes  its innocence to its own powers.

25. εις κυριον περι λογισμου υπερηφανιας την βοηθειαν απαρνουμενου τηι δε αυτου δυναμει ελλογουντος την νικην

+ Ps 43.7 For I will not trust in my bow : neither shall my sword save me. But you have saved us from them that afflict us : and have put them to shame that hate us.

+ Πσ 43·7 οὐ γὰρ ἐπὶ τῷ τόξῳ μου ἐλπιῶ͵ καὶ ἡ ῥομφαία μου οὐ σώσει με·

 

 

8.26 For the demon announcing to us that it is appropriate for us to explicate the Scriptures like our father, the blessed Macarius:

26. προς δαιμονα ημιν τας γραφας εξεγεισθαι επαγγελλοντα δει ημας ειπειν ωσπερ και ο πατηρ ημων ο μακαριος Μακαιος

+ Ps 49:16 f.   But to the sinner God has said, “Why do you declare my covenant and take up my covenant in your mouth, 17 whereas you have hated instruction and have cast my words behind you

+ ψ 49,16.   τῷ δὲ ἁμαρτωλῷ εἶπεν ὁ θεός  Ἵνα τί σὺ διηγῇ τὰ δικαιώματά μου καὶ ἀναλαμβάνεις τὴν διαθήκην μου διὰ στόματός σου; 17 σὺ δὲ ἐμίσησας παιδείαν καὶ ἐξέβαλες τοὺς λόγους μου εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω.

 

 

8.28.  For the Lord concerning the [tempting-]thought of pride which, having abided within us, presents our nous incapable of free speech at the time of prayer.

28. εις κυριον περι λογισμων υπερηφανων εν ημιν εμμειναντων και τον νουν ημων προσευχης καιρωι ανευπαρρησιας παρισταντων

+ Ps 64.4 The words of the wicked have prevailed over us: and you, pardon our sins.

8.30 For the [tempting-]thought of pride praising me on the beautiful edification of souls in the perfection of divine knowledge

30. προς λογισμον υπερηθ. επαινουντα με ως καλως οικοδομουντα τας ψυχας κατορθωμασι τε και θεου γνωσει

+ Ps 126:1  Except the Lord build the house, they that build labor in vain; except the Lord keep the city, the watchman watches in vain.

+ ψ 126,1   Ἐὰν μὴ κύριος οἰκοδομήσῃ οἶκον, εἰς μάτην ἐκοπίασαν οἱ οἰκοδομοῦντες αὐτόν· ἐὰν μὴ κύριος φυλάξῃ πόλιν, εἰς μάτην ἠγρύπνησεν ὁ φυλάσσων.

 

 

8.41. For the demon snatching the nous away towards blasphemy.

41. προς δαιμονας τον νουν προς βλασφημιαν κατα θεου αρπαζοτας

+ Job13:7 Do you not speak before the Lord, and [yet] you utter deceit before him?

+ ιοβ13·7 πότερον οὐκ ἔναντι κυρίου λαλεῖτε͵ ἔναντι δὲ αὐτοῦ φθέγγεσθε δόλον;

 

 

8.47. for the proud and blasphemous [tempting-]thought accounting the demons as gods.

ιερεμ. 47. προς λογισμους υπερηφανους καιβλασφημους ͅ76αα τους δαιμονας θεους ποιουντας

+ Jer 10:11 Thus shall you say to them, Let the gods which have not made heaven and earth perish from off the earth, and from under this sky.

+ ιερεμ 10·11 οὕτως ἐρεῖτε αὐτοῖς Θεοί͵ οἳ τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ τὴν γῆν οὐκ ἐποίησαν͵ ἀπολέσθωσαν ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς καὶ ὑποκάτωθεν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ τούτου.

 

 

8.48. For the Lord concerning the proud [tempting-]thought praising me and saying: ‘behold you have overcome your enemies!’

48. εις κυριον περι λογισμ. υπερηφ. δοξαζοντος με και λεγοντος ιδου τους εχθρους σου νενικησας

+ Jer 10:23 I know, O Lord, that man’s way is not his own; neither shall a man go, and direct his going.

+ Thren [Lam] 3:31 ff. For the Lord will not reject [us] for ever. For he whohas brought down will pity, according to the abundance of his mercy.

8.492.For the Lord concerning the blasphenous [tempting-]thought insinuating itself into the mind at the time of prayer.

492. εις κυριον περι λογισμων βλασφημων την διανοιαν καιρωι προσευχης καταδυοντων

+ cf. Thren 3:43 ff You have visited us in wrath, and driven us away: you have slain, you have not pitied. you have veiled yourself with a cloud because of prayer, that I might be blind and be cast off. you have set us alone in the midst of the nations.

493. ιεζεκ. προς δαιμονα υπερηφανον αυτον θεον ονομαζοντα ͅ76αβ

+Mt 15:11 not what goes into the mouth defiles a man, but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.

8.496 For a soul being oppressed by the demon of pride and not understanding how to cast it out.

μαρκ. 496. προς ψυχην υπο λογισμων υπερηφανιας θλιβομενην και οπως αυτυς εκβαλλει ουκ επισταμενην

+ Mk 9:29 And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”

8.50. For the proud mind that yearns to become first among the brethren:

8.51. For the proud [tempting-]thought supposing in regard to the commands of God, “who practices them?”

λουκα. 51. προς λογισμον υπερηφανον οιομενον οτι υπερ τας θεου εντολας τι πραττει

+Luke 17:10  So you also, when you have done all that is commanded you, say, “We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.”

8.52. For the proud [tempting-]thought that justifies itself while being displeased at the activities the brethren engage in out of their weakness:

52. προς λογισμον υπερηφανον αυτον δικαιουντα εν δε τοις υπο των αδελφων δι’ ασθενειας πεπραγμενοις ουκ ευδοκοντα

+Luke 14:11  For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

+ Λκ 14·11 ὅτι πᾶς ὁ ὑψῶν ἑαυτὸν ταπεινωθήσεται καὶ ὁ ταπεινῶν ἑαυτὸν ὑψωθήσεται.

 

 

8.53. For a proud [tempting-]thought that despises  the brother who does not eat, considering it to be a weakness that will render him incapable of eating, and thus of standing fast in the battle: and on account of this he should give up his own fasting.

ρωμαι 53. προς λογισμον υπερηφανον τον αδελφον τον ουκ εσθιοντα εξουδενουντα τε και ασθενη αυτον νομιζοντα ως δη αδυναμουντα εσθιοντα εν τωι πολεμωι ανθιστασθαι και δια τουτο εαυτον τηι νηστειαι επιδοντα
