Cari Fratelli,

I welcome you on the occasion of the annual course on the internal forum. I thank Cardinal Mauro Piacenza for the words with which he introduced our meeting

For a quarter of a century the Apostolic Penitentiary has offered the opportunity for this course especially to new priests and deacons, to contribute to the formation of good confessors, aware of the importance of this ministry. I thank you for this valuable service and encourage you to carry it forward with renewed commitment, building on experience gained and with skilful creativity, to increasingly enable the Church and confessors to carry out the ministry of mercy [compassion], which is so important!

Da un quarto di secolo la Penitenzieria Apostolica offre, soprattutto a neo-presbiteri e ai diaconi, l’opportunità di questo corso, per contribuire alla formazione di buoni confessori, consapevoli dell’importanza di questo ministero. Vi ringrazio per tale prezioso servizio e vi incoraggio a portarlo avanti con impegno rinnovato, facendo tesoro dell’esperienza acquisita e con sapiente creatività, per aiutare sempre meglio la Chiesa e i confessori a svolgere il ministero della misericordia, che è tanto importante!

In this regard, I wish to offer a few thoughts

A questo proposito, desidero offrirvi alcune riflessioni.

First of all, the principal agent of the ministry of reconciliation is the Holy Spirit. The forgiveness the sacrament confers is that new life sent by the Risen Lord through His Spirit: “Receive the Holy Spirit. For those whose sins you forgive are forgiven; those whose sins you retain , they are retained” (Jn 20:22-23 ). Therefore, you are called to always be “men of the Holy Spirit”, witnesses and heralds, happy and strong, in the resurrection of the Lord. This testimony can be read on the face, heard in the voice of the priest who administers with faith and “anointing” the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Anzitutto, il protagonista del ministero della Riconciliazione è lo Spirito Santo. Il perdono che il Sacramento conferisce è la vita nuova trasmessa dal Signore Risorto per mezzo del suo Spirito: «Ricevete lo Spirito Santo. A coloro a cui perdonerete i peccati saranno perdonati; a coloro a cui non perdonerete, non saranno perdonati» (Gv 20,22-23). Pertanto, voi siete chiamati ad essere sempre “uomini dello Spirito Santo”, testimoni e annunciatori, lieti e forti, della risurrezione del Signore. Questa testimonianza si legge sul volto, si sente nella voce del sacerdote che amministra con fede e con “unzione” il Sacramento della Riconciliazione.

He welcomes penitents

not with the attitude of a judge

nor even that of just a friend,

Egli accoglie i penitenti

non con l’atteggiamento di un giudice

 e nemmeno con quello di un semplice amico,

but with the love of God:

with the love of a father who sees his son return and goes to meet him;

the shepherd who found the lost sheep.

 ma con la carità di Dio,

 con l’amore di un padre che vede tornare il figlio e gli va incontro, del pastore che ha ritrovato la pecora smarrita.

While it is true that the tradition points out the dual role of physician and judge for confessors,

never forget that
as a physician you are called to heal
and as judge to absolve,

 non dimentichiamo mai che
come medico è chiamato a guarire
e come giudice ad assolvere.

For it often happens that a person comes and says: “I have not been to confession for many years: I have had this problem.  I stopped going to Confession because I went to a priest and he said this to me [...] ” And you can see the imprudence, the lack of pastoral love, in what the person relates. And they have been alienated by a bad experience during confession. If there is this attitude of the Father who comes bearing the goodness of God, such a thing will never happen

Ma, tante volte capita che una persona viene e dice: “Non mi confesso da tanti anni, ho avuto questo problema, ho lasciato la Confessione perché ho trovato un sacerdote e mi ha detto questo”, e si vede l’imprudenza, la mancanza di amore pastorale, in quello che racconta la persona. E si allontanano, per una cattiva esperienza nella Confessione. Se c’è questo atteggiamento di padre, che viene dalla bontà di Dio, questa cosa non succederà mai.

We must guard against two extremes: severity and laxity. Neither is good, because [neither one] really provides care for the person of the penitent. Mercy, however, truly listens with the heart of God and desires to accompany the soul on the path of reconciliation. Confession is not a court of condemnation, but an experience of forgiveness and mercy.

E bisogna guardarsi dai due estremi opposti: il rigorismo e il lassismo. Nessuno dei due fa bene, perché in realtà non si fanno carico della persona del penitente. Invece la misericordia ascolta veramente con il cuore di Dio e vuole accompagnare l’anima nel cammino della riconciliazione. La Confessione non è un tribunale di condanna, ma esperienza di perdono e di misericordia!

Finally, we all know the difficulties often encountered Confession. There are many reasons, both historical and spiritual. However, we know that the Lord wanted to make this immense gift to the Church, baptized by offering the consolation of the Father’s forgiveness. And this is the consolation of the Father’s forgiveness. For this reason it is very important that in every diocese and parish communities, particular care is taken for the celebration of the sacrament of forgiveness and salvation. It good for the faithful in each parish to know when they can find priests available: for when there is fidelity the fruits are visible. This is particularly true for the churches entrusted to religious communities, which can ensure a constant presence of confessors.

Infine, tutti conosciamo le difficoltà che spesso la Confessione incontra. Sono tante le ragioni, sia storiche sia spirituali. Tuttavia, noi sappiamo che il Signore ha voluto fare questo immenso dono alla Chiesa, offrendo ai battezzati la sicurezza del perdono del Padre. E’ questo: è la sicurezza del perdono del Padre. Per questo è molto importante che, in tutte le diocesi e nelle comunità parrocchiali, si curi particolarmente la celebrazione di questo Sacramento di perdono e di salvezza. E’ bene che in ogni parrocchia i fedeli sappiano quando possono trovare i sacerdoti disponibili: quando c’è la fedeltà, i frutti si vedono. Questo vale in modo particolare per le chiese affidate alle Comunità religiose, che possono assicurare una presenza costante di confessori.

To the Virgin Mother of Mercy, we entrust the ministry of priests, and every Christian community, that they may ever more discover the value of the sacrament of Penance. To our Mother, I commend all of you and I cordially bless you
