 THE SENTENCES of SEXTUS

 

     

1 Πιστὸς ἄνθρωπος ἐκλεκτός ἐστιν ἄνθρωπος.

1. A faithful person is a chosen person.

1. Fidelis homo electus homo est.

 

 

 

2 ἐκλεκτὸς ἄνθρωπος ἄνθρωπός ἐστι θεοῦ.

2. A chosen person is a person of God.

2 electus homo homo dei est.

 

 

 

3 θεοῦ ἄνθρωπος ὁ ἄξιος θεοῦ.

3. A person of God is worthy of God.

3 homo dei est qui deo dignus est.

 

 

 

4 θεοῦ ἄξιος ὁ μηδὲν ἀνάξιον θεοῦ πράττων.

4. Worthy of God is one who does nothing unworthy of God.

4 deo dignus est qui nihil indignum deo agit.

 

 

 

5 ἐπιτηδεύων οὖν πιστὸς εἶναι μηδὲν ἀνάξιον θεοῦ πράξῃς.

5. Thus if you want to be faithful, do nothing that is unworthy of God.

5 studens fidelis esse nihil quod deo indignum est agas.

 

 

 

6 ὀλιγόπιστος ἐν πίστει ἄπιστος.

6. Scanty faith in faith[fulness] is faithless[ness].

6 dubius in fide infidelis.

 

 

 

7a πιστὸς ἐν δοκιμῇ πίστεως θεὸς ἐν ἀνθρώπου σώματι [ζῶντι].

7a. One who is faithful when faith is tested is a god in a [living] human body.

7b ἄπιστος ἐν πίστει νεκρὸς ἄνθρωπος ἐν σώματι ζῶντι.

7b. Regarding faith, [the] faithless one is a dead person in a living body.

7b infidelis in fide homo mortuus in corpore viventi.

 

 

 

8 πιστὸς ἀληθείᾳ ὁ ἀναμάρτητος.

8. One who is truly faithful is sinless

8 vere fidelis est qui non peccat.

 

 

 

9 μέχρι καὶ τῶν ἐλαχίστων ἀκριβῶς βίου.

9. Even in the least matters, live strictly.

9 etiam in minimis caute age.

 

 

 

10 οὐ γὰρ μικρὸν ἐν βίῳ τὸ παρὰ μικρόν.

10. No small matter in life is truly small.

10 non est minimum in vita hominis neglegere minima.

 

 

 

11 πᾶν ἁμάρτημα ἀσέβημα ἡγοῦ.

11. Every sin should be regarded as  sacrilege.

11 omne peccatum inpietatem puta.

 

 

 

12 οὐκ ὀφθαλμὸς οὐδὲ χεὶρ ἁμαρτάνει οὐδέ τι τῶν ὁμοίων͵ ἀλλ΄ ὁ κακῶς χρώμενος χειρὶ καὶ ὀφθαλμῷ.

12. Neither eye nor hand nor any such member sins, but rather the one who makes bad use of hand and eye.

12 non manus aut oculus peccat aut aliquod huiusmodi membrum, sed male uti manu vel oculo.

 

 

 

13 πᾶν μέλος τοῦ σώματος ἀναπεῖθόν σε μὴ σωφρονεῖν ῥῖψον· ἄμεινον γὰρ χωρὶς τοῦ μέλους ζῆν σωφρόνως ἢ μετὰ τοῦ μέλους ὀλεθρίως.

13. Any member of the body that incites you to intemperance - cast it away; for it is preferable to live temperately without the member than be destroyed along with the member. (cf Mt 18:8)

13 omne membrum corporis quod suadet te contra pudi-citiam agere, abiciendum; melius est enim sine uno membro vivere quam cum eo puniri.

 

 

 

14 ἀθανάτους σοι νόμιζε παρὰ τῇ κρίσει καὶ τὰς τιμὰς ἔσεσθαι καὶ τὰς τιμωρίας.

14. Understand that both your rewards and punishments will be eternal at the judgment.

14 inmortales tibi crede manere in iudicio et honores et poenas.

 

 

 

15 ὁπόσα τοῦ κόσμου ἔχεις͵ κἂν ἀφέληταί σού τις͵ μὴ ἀγανάκτει.

15. Do not become indignant if someone takes away what you have in the world.

15 quicquid saeculi habes, etiam auferat tibi quis, non indigneris

 

 

 

16 σεαυτὸν ἐπιλήψιμον μὴ πάρεχε τῷ κόσμῳ.

16. Do not present your defects to the world.

16 te ipsum reprehensibilem mundo non praebeas.

 

 

 

17 χωρὶς τῆς ἐλευθερίας πάντα ἀφαιρουμένῳ σε τῷ πέλας ὕπεικε.

17. Let your neighbor take away everything except your freedom.

17 omnia auferenti abs te cede praeter libertatem.

 

 

 

18 σοφὸς ἀκτήμων ὅμοιος θεῷ.

18. A wise person lacking property is like God.

18 sapiens vir et contemptor pecuniae similis deo est.

 

 

 

19 τοῖς κοσμικοῖς πράγμασιν εἰς αὐτὰ τὰ ἀναγκαῖα χρῶ.

19. Make use of worldly things only when it is necessary.

19 rebus saeculi in causis tantum necessariis utere.

 

 

 

20 τὰ μὲν τοῦ κόσμου τῷ κόσμῳ͵ τὰ δὲ τοῦ θεοῦ τῷ θεῷ ἀκριβῶς ἀποδίδου.

20. Be careful to pay back to the world what is of the world, and to God what is of God.

20 quae saeculi sunt saeculo et quae dei sunt deo.

 

 

 

21 τὴν ψυχήν σου νόμιζε παραθήκην ἔχειν παρὰ θεοῦ.

21. Understand that you have your your soul as a trust from God.

21 certus esto quia animam tuam depositum fidele acceperis a deo.

 

 

 

22 ὅτε λέγεις περὶ θεοῦ͵ κρίνῃ ὑπὸ θεοῦ.

22. When you speak about God, you are judged by God.

22 cum loqueris de deo, scito quia iudiceris a deo.

 

 

 

23 ἄριστον ἡγοῦ καθαρμὸν τὸ μηδένα ἀδικεῖν.

23. Understand that the highest purification is to do no wrong to anyone.

23 optimam purificationem putato nemini nocere.

 

 

 

24 ψυχὴ καθαίρεται λόγῳ θεοῦ ὑπὸ σοφοῦ.

24. The soul is purified by a word of God from a wise person.

24 anima purificatur verbo dei per sapientiam.

 

 

 

25 ἀναίσθητον οὐσίαν μὴ πεισθῇς εἶναί ποτε θεοῦ.

25. Never become convinced that the essence of God is insensibility.

25 numquam putes dei substantiam insensibilem esse.

 

 

 

26 ὁ θεὸς καθὸ νοῦς ἐστιν αὐτοκίνητος͵ κατ΄ αὐτὸ τοῦτο καὶ ὑφέστηκεν.

26. Because God is intellect (nous) he is self-moving; for the same reason He is also subsistent.

26 deus sicut mens est, quae sponte movetur, secundum hoc et subsistit.

 

 

 

27 θεοῦ μέγεθος οὐκ ἂν ἐξεύροις πτεροῖς πετόμενος.

27. The greatness of God will remain undiscoverable, even if you fly with wings.

27 magnitudinem dei non invenies, etiamsi pennis volare possis.

 

 

 

28 θεοῦ ὄνομα μὴ ζήτει͵ οὐ γὰρ εὑρήσεις· πᾶν τὸ ὀνομαζόμενον ὀνομάζεται ὑπὸ τοῦ κρείττονος͵ ἵνα τὸ μὲν καλῇ͵ τὸ δὲ ὑπακούῃ· τίς οὖν ὁ ὀνομάσας θεόν; θεὸς οὐκ ὄνομα θεοῦ͵ ἀλλὰ δόξα περὶ θεοῦ.

28. Do not search for the name of God, for you will not find it. Everything that is named is named is named by someone higher, so they when call the other will obey. Who then can name God? “God” is not God’s name, but rather an opinion concerning God.

28 nomen dei non quaeras, quia nec invenies, quia omne quod nomine compellatur a meliore nomen accipit, ut aliud quidem vocet, aliud autem audiat. quis ergo est qui nomen posuit deo? deus non nomen est dei sed indicium quod sentimus de deo.

 

 

 

29 μηθὲν οὖν ἐν θεῷ ὃ μὴ ἔστι ζήτει.

29. Therefore do not search in God for what does not exist.

29 nihil ergo in deo quod non licet quaeras.

 

 

 

30 θεὸς αὐγὴ σοφὴ τοῦ ἐναντίου ἀνεπίδεκτος.

30. God is wise light that is not susceptible of opposition.

30 deus sapiens lux est incapax contrarii.

 

 

 

31 ὁ θεὸς ὅσα ἐποίησεν͵ ὑπὲρ ἀνθρώπων αὐτὰ ἐποίησεν.

31. What God has done He has done for humankind.

31 quaecumque autem fecit deus, pro hominibus ea fecit.

 

 

 

32 ἄγγελος ὑπηρέτης θεοῦ πρὸς ἄνθρωπον͵ οὐ γὰρ δὴ πρὸς οὐδένα ἄλλον· τιμιώτερον οὖν ἄνθρωπος ἀγγέλου παρὰ θεῷ.

32. An angel is a servant of God for humankind, and for no one else. Thus a human being is of greater value than an angel before God.

32 angelus minister dei ad hominem; non enim ministrat ad nullum; tam pretiosus est homo apud deum quam angelus.

 

 

 

33 τὸ μὲν πρῶτον εὐεργετοῦν ὁ θεός͵ τὸ δὲ δεύτερον εὐεργε τούμενον ἄνθρωπος.

33. On the one hand God confers benefits; on the other, human beings receive the benefit.

33 primus beneficus deus, secundus est is qui beneficii eius fit particeps homo.

 

 

 

34 βίου τοιγαροῦν ὡς ὢν μετὰ θεόν.

34. Live thus as one who is next after God.

34 vive tgttur tamquam qui sis post deum et electus ab eo.

35 ἐκλεκτὸς ὢν ἔχεις τι ἐν τῇ συστάσει σου ὁποῖον θεός· χρῶ οὖν τῇ συστάσει σου ὡς ἱερῷ θεοῦ.

35. Having been chosen, there is within you that which is God-like. Furnish therefore what is within you as a temple of God.

35 habes in te aliquid simile dei et ideo utere te ipso velut templo dei propter illud quod in te simile dei.

 

 

 

36 ἐξουσίαν πιστῷ ὁ θεὸς δίδωσι τὴν κατὰ θεόν· καθαρὰν οὖν δίδωσι καὶ ἀναμάρτητον.

36. God gives to the faithful authority that accords with God; what he gives is thus pure and sinless.

36 libertatem arbitrii sui permisit hominibus deus sine dubio ut pure et sine peccato viventes similes fiant deo.

 

 

 

37 αἰδείσθω σου τὸν βίον ὁ κόσμος.

37. Enable the world to respect your life.

37 revereatur vitam tuam mundus.

 

 

 

38 μηδενὶ σεαυτὸν ἐπιλήψιμον δίδου.

38. Give no one reason to criticize you.

38 nihil admittas quod tibi inurat notam.

 

 

 

39 κακῶς ζῶντα μετὰ τὴν ἀπαλλαγὴν τοῦ σώματος εὐθύνει κακὸς δαίμων μέχρις οὗ καὶ τὸν ἔσχατον κοδράντην ἀπο λάβῃ.

39. One who lives viciously will, upon release from his body, be called to account by a vicious demon until he pays the last penny. (cf Mt 5:25-26)

39 male viventes cum e corpore excesserint cruciabit malus daemon, usque quo exigat ab eis etiam ultimum quadrantem.

 

 

 

40 μακάριος ἀνήρ͵ οὗ τῆς ψυχῆς οὐδεὶς ἐπιλήψεται εἰς θεὸν πορευομένης.

40. Blessed the person whose soul is attacked by no one in its journey towards God.

40 beatus vir cuius animam nemo reprehendit ad deum pergentem.

 

 

 

41 ὃ ἂν τιμήσῃς ὑπὲρ πάντα͵ ἐκεῖνό σου κυριεύσει.

41. Whatever you honor above all else will rule over you.

41 quicquid super omnia honoraveris, hoc tibi dominabitur.

 

 

 

42 τίμα τὸ ἄριστον͵ ἵνα καὶ ἄρχῃ ὑπὸ τοῦ ἀρίστου.

42. Honor what is highest so that you may be governed by what is highest.

42 deum ergo honora super omnia, ut ipse tibi dominetur.

 

 

 

43 ἀρχόμενος ὑπὸ τοῦ ἀρίστου αὐτὸς ἄρξεις ὧν ἂν προαιρῇ.

43. If you are ruled by what is noblest, you will yourself rule whatever you choose.

43 si autem dominatum tui gerit deus, ita demum tu dominaberis omnibus.

 

 

 

44 τιμὴ μεγίστη θεῷ θεοῦ γνῶσις καὶ ὁμοίωμα.

44. The best way to honor God is knowledge of God and imitation [of Him].

44 honor summus deo scire eum et imitari.

 

 

 

45 ὅμοιον μὲν οὐδὲν θεῷ͵ προσφιλέστατον δὲ τὸ εἰς δύναμιν ἐξομοιούμενον.

45. Nothing is like God, but most pleasing [to Him] is to imitates Him as far as possible.

45 simile quidem deo per omnia nihil est, grata tamen ei est inferioris prout possibile est imitatio.

46a ἱερὸν ἅγιον θεοῦ διάνοια εὐσεβοῦς.

46α. A holy temple of God is the mind of the pious.

46 templum sanctum est dei mens pii,

46b. A most excellent altar of God is heart that is pure and without sin..

et altare optimum est ei cor mundum et sine peccato.

47 θυσία θεῷ μόνη καὶ προσηνὴς ἡ ἀνθρώποις εὐεργεσία διὰ θεόν.

47. The only fitting sacrifice to God is for men to do good because of God.

47 hostia deo sola et acceptabilis bene facere hominibus pro deo.

 

 

 

48 ἄνθρωπος κεχαρισμένα θεῷ πράττει ὁ ζῶν εἰς δύναμιν κατὰ θεόν.

48. A person is pleasing to God by living as far as possible in accordance with God.

48 deo gratiam praestat homo qui in quantum possibile est vivit secundum deum.

 

 

 

49 ὁ μὲν θεὸς οὐδενὸς δεῖται͵ ὁ δὲ πιστὸς μόνου θεοῦ.

49. God has need of no one; the faithful person has need only of God.

49 deus quidem nullius eget, fidelis autem dei solius.

     

50 ζηλοῖ τὸν οὐδενὸς δεόμενον ὁ τῶν ὀλίγων ἀναγκαίως δεόμενος.

50. The person who requires little for his needs emulates Him who needs nothing.

50 aemulatur ergo illum qui nullius eget, is qui paucis in rebus necessariis indiget.

51 ἄσκει μέγας μὲν εἶναι παρὰ θεῷ͵ παρὰ δὲ ἀνθρώποις ἀν επίφθονος.

51. Endeavor to be great in God's sight yet without reproach among men.

51 satis age magnus quidem esse apud deum, apud homines vero invidiam effugere.

52 χρηστὸς ὢν εἰς τοὺς δεομένους μέγας ἂν εἴης παρὰ θεῷ.

52. If you are good to the needy, you will be great in God's sight.

52 si benignus es erga indigentes, magnus eris apud deum.

53 ἀνδρὸς σοφοῦ ζῶντος μὲν ὀλίγος ὁ λόγος παρὰ ἀνθρώποις͵ τελευτήσαντος δὲ τὸ κλέος ᾄδεται.

53. While a wise man is alive his fame among men is small, but after his death men sing his praises.

53 sapiens vir, cuius viventis quidem parva est apud homines opinio, defuncti vero gloria praedicatur.

54 τὸν χρόνον ὃν ἂν μὴ νοήσῃς τὸν θεόν͵ τοῦτον νόμιζέ σοι ἀπολωλέναι.

54. Consider as lost the time you do not spend thinking about God.

54 omne tempus quod non de deo cogitas, hoc te computa perdidisse.

55 τὸ μὲν σῶμά σου μόνον ἐπιδημείτω τῇ γῇ͵ ἡ δὲ ψυχὴ ἀεὶ ἔστω παρὰ θεῷ.

55. Let your body alone be at home on earth; let your soul be always with God.

55 corpus quidem tuum incedat in terra, anima autem semper sit apud deum.

56 νόει τὰ καλά͵ ἵνα καὶ πράττῃς τὰ καλά.

56. Think about good things so that you may also do good things.

56 intellege quae sint bona ut et agas bona.

57a ἔννοια ἀνθρώπου θεὸν οὐ λανθάνει.

57α. A person's thoughts do not escape God.

57 cogitatio hominis deum non latet,

57b ἔστω σου ἡ διάνοια καθαρὰ κακοῦ παντός.

57b. Let your mind be free of all evil.

et ideo cogitatio tua pura sit ab omni malo.

58 ἄξιος ἔσο τοῦ ἀξιώσαντός σε εἰπεῖν υἱὸν καὶ πρᾶττε πάντα ὡς υἱὸς θεοῦ.

58. Be worthy of the One who deems you worthy to be called a son and act always as a son of God.

58 dignus esto eo qui dignatus est te filium dicere, et age omnia quasi filius dei.

59 θεὸν πατέρα καλῶν ἐν οἷς πράττεις τούτου μέμνησο.

59. You call God "Father": remember this in your actions.

59 qui deum patrem vocas, hoc in actibus tuis memor esto.

60 ἁγνὸς ἀνὴρ καὶ ἀναμάρτητος ἐξουσίαν ἔχει παρὰ θεῷ ὡς υἱὸς θεοῦ.

60. A chaste and sinless man has power in God's sight as a son of God.

60 vir castus et sine peccato potestatem accipit a deo esse filius dei.

61 ἀγαθὴ διάνοια χῶρος θεοῦ.

61. A good mind is the abode of God.

61 bona mens chorus est dei.

62 κακὴ διάνοια χῶρός ἐστιν κακῶν.

62. An evil mind is the abode of evil things.

62 mala mens chorus est daemonum malorum.

63 τὸν ἀδικοῦντα τοῦ ἀδικεῖν ἀπαλλάττων κολάζοις ἂν κατὰ θεόν.

63. If you release an unrighteous person from his wrong­doing, you punish him as God would.

63 iniustum si inhibeas agere iniuste, hoc est secundum deum punire.

64 ἄσκει μὴ τὸ δοκεῖν ἀλλὰ τὸ εἶναι δίκαιος· τὸ δοκεῖν γὰρ ἕκαστον τοῦ εἶναι ἀφαιρεῖται.

64. Endeavor not to appear righteous but to be righteous, for appearance always usurps true being.

64 satis age non videri sed esse iustus; certum est enim vere non esse eum qui videri vult.

65 τίμα τὸ δίκαιον δι΄ αὐτό.

65. Honor righteousness for its own sake.

65 honora quod iustum est propter hoc ipsum quia iustum est.

66 οὐκ ἂν λάθοις θεὸν πράττων ἄδικα͵ οὐδὲ γὰρ διανοού μενος.

66. Even less than you can hide your thoughts can you hide your unjust acts from God.

66 nequaquam latebis deum agens iniuste, sed ne cogitans qutdem.

67 σώφρων ἀνὴρ ἁγνὸς παρὰ τῷ θεῷ.

67. The temperate man is pure in God's sight.

67 vir sapiens castus erit deo.

68 ἀκολασίαν φεῦγε.

68. Flee licentiousness.

68 omnem spurcitiam fuge.

69 εὐλογιστίαν ἄσκει.

69. Exercise prudence.

69 semper de bonis loqui stude.

70 κράτει τῶν ἡδονῶν.

70. Master pleasures.

70 libidinem vince.

 

 

 

71a νίκα τὸ σῶμα ἐν παντί.

71α. Conquer the body in every [way].

71 contine corpus in omnibus, quia ex deliciis

71b ἐκ φιληδονίας ἀκολασίαν οὐκ ἐκφεύξῃ.

71b. If you love pleasure, you will not escape licentiousness.

et voluptatibus non effugies spurcitiam.

72 φιληδόνου ὁ θεὸς οὐκ ἀκούει.

72. God does not listen to one who loves pleasure.

72 voluptuosum deus non exaudit.

73 τρυφῆς πέρας ὄλεθρος.

73. Luxurious living results in ruin.

73 deliciarum finis corruptio.

74 ὁ λόγος σου τῶν ὁρμῶν σου προηγείσθω.

74. Let reason guide your actions.

74 verbum vel ratio praecedat actus tuos.

75a δεινότατόν ἐστιν πάθεσι δουλεύειν.

75α. It is terrible thing to be a slave to [one's] passion.

75 perniciosum est servire vitiis.

75b. The soul has as many masters as it has passions.

76 φιλοχρηματία φιλοσωματίας ἔλεγχος.

76. Love of money demonstrates love of body.

76 amor pecuniae amorem carnalium indicat.

77 κτῶ τὰ τῆς ψυχῆς ὡς βέβαια.

77. Acquire the things of the soul because they are secure.

77 adquire possessionem firmam animae virtutem.

78 ἀποτάττου τοῖς τοῦ σώματος͵ ἐφ΄ ὅσον δυνατὸς εἶ.

78. Put aside the things of the body as much as you can.

78 renuntia rebus corporis, dum adhuc potes et quantum potes.

79 μόνον οἰκεῖον ἡγοῦ τὸ ἀγαθόν.

79. Consider only the good as your own.

79 hoc solum tibi proprium ducito, quod bonum est.

80 ὁποῖος θέλεις εὐχόμενος εἶναι͵ ἀεὶ ἔσο.

80. Whatever sort of person you desire to be when pray­ing, be such always.

80 qualis vis esse cum oras deum, semper talis esto.

81 ὅταν τὰ κάλλιστα τῶν κτημάτων εὐλόγως εἰς βόρβορον ῥίψῃς͵ τότε καθαρὸς ὢν αἰτοῦ τι παρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ.

81. When you purposely throw your best possessions in the mud, then, being pure, ask for something from God.

81 cum optima quaeque abieceris praedam, tunc purificatus pete quod vis a deo.

82a ὁποῖος θέλεις εἶναι παρὰ θεῷ͵ ἤδη ἔσο.

82α. Whatever sort of person you desire to be in God's sight, be such now.

82a qualis vis esse apud deum, iam nunc esto talis.

82b τῶν τοῦ κόσμου μεταδιδοὺς καταφρόνει.

82b. Despise worldly things by sharing them.

82bc cum distribuis ea quae mundi sunt, et ea despice, tam-quam qui te scias esse post deum.

82c μέμνησο ὢν μετὰ θεόν.

82c. Remember that you are next in rank after God.

82e μιαίνει τὸν θεὸν ὁ κακῶς νοῶν τὸν θεόν.

82e. Whoever thinks evil of God defiles God.

 

83 γλῶσσα βλάσφημος διανοίας ἔλεγχος κακῆς.

83. A blasphemous tongue is proof of an evil mind.

83 lingua maleloquax indicium mentis est malae.

84 γλῶσσαν εὔφημον κέκτησο͵ μάλιστα δὲ περὶ θεοῦ.

84. Let your tongue speak good, especially about God.

84 insuesce linguam tuam bene proloqui et maxime cum de deo sermo fit.

85 κακῶς μὲν ποιῆσαι θεὸν δυνατὸς οὐδείς͵ ἀσεβέστατος δὲ ὁ βλασφημῶν· δυνατὸς γὰρ ὢν κἂν ἐποίησεν.

85. No one can inflict evil upon God; but the blasphemer is the most impious, for, if he could, he would do God harm.
