To the Monks in Cenobia or Communities

[p. 152] πρὸς τοὺς ἐν κοινοβίοις ἢ συνοδίαις μονοχούς

 

 

l. Heirs of God, listen to the logoi of God,.
co-heirs of Christ, receive the maxims of Christ;

 so that you may give them to the hearts of your children,
 and teach them the logoi of the wise.

1. Κληρονόμοι θεοῦ ἀκούσατε λόγων θεοῦ,

   συγκληρονόμοι δὲ Χριστοῦ δέξασθε ῥήσεις Χριστοῦ,

ἵνα δῶτε αὐτὰς καρδίαις τέκνων ὑμῶν,

  λόγους δὲ σοφῶν διδάξητε αὐτούς.

For Evagrius the term logoi can mean words, inner meanings , or divine principles

 

 

 

2. A good father trains his sons;
but an evil father will destroy them.

2. Πατὴρ ἀγαθὸς παιδεύει υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ,
  πατὴρ δὲ πονηρὸς ἀπολέσει αὐτούς.

 

 

3. Faith is the beginning of love.
 and the
[final] end of love is knowledge of God.

3. Πίστις ἀρχὴ ἀγάπης,
 
τέλος δὲ ἀγάπης γνῶσις θεοῦ.

 

 

4. Fear of the Lord guards the soul.
 temperance strengthens it.

4. Φόβος κυρίου διατηρήσει ψυχήν,

ἐγκράτεια δὲ ἀγαθὴ ἐνισχύσει αὐτήν

 

 

5. The patient endurance of a man gives birth to hope;
and good hope will glorify him.

5.Ὑπομονὴ ἀνδρὸς τίκτει ἐλπίδα,
ἐλπὶς δὲ ἀγαθὴ δοξάσει αὐτόν.

 

 

6. One who dominates his flesh, will be dispassionate;

   while one who nurtures it, will suffer pain from it.

6.Ὁ δουλαγωγῶν σάρκας αὐτοῦ
 ἀπαθὴς ἔσται,

δὲ ἐκτρέφων αὐτὰς
 ὀδυνηθήσεται ἐπ' αὐταῖς.

 

 

7. [The] spirit of fornication is in the bodies of the intemperate;

   while [the] spirit of chastity is in the souls of the temperate.

7. Πνεῦμα πορνείας ἐν σώμασιν ἀκρατῶν,

  πνεῦμα δὲ σωφροσύνης ἐν ψυχαῖς ἐγκρατῶν.

 

 

8. Withdrawal [into solitude] in love purifies the heart;

    while withdrawal [into solitude] accompanied by hatred agitates it.

8.Ἀναχώρησις ἐν ἀγάπῃ
καθαίρει καρδίαν,

ἀναχώρησις δὲ μετὰ μίσους
 ἐκταράσσει αὐτήν.

 

 

9. Better to be one among a thousand in love

    than solitary, accompanied by hatred, in inaccessible caves.

9. Κρείσσων χιλιοστὸς ἐν ἀγάπῃ

   ἢ μόνος μετὰ μίσους
ἐν ἀδύτοις σπηλαίοις.

 

 

10. One who enchains memory of injury in his soul

     is like one who hides fire in chaff.

10.Ὁ ἐναποδεσμεύων μνησικακίαν ἐν ψυχῇ αὐτοῦ

ὁμοιός ἐστι τῷ κρύπτοντι πῦρ ἐν ἀχύροις.

 

 

11. Do not give much food to your body
and you will not while sleeping see evil fantasies.

  For just as flame consumes the oak tree
so hunger extinguishes shameful fantasies .

11. Μὴ δῷς βρώματα πολλὰ τῷ σώματί σου,

καὶ οὐ μὴ ἴδῃς καθ' ὕππνους φαντασίας κακάς.

ὃν τρόπον γάρ φλόξ καταναλίσκει δρυμόν,

οὕτω φαντασίας αἰσχρὰς σβέννυσι πεῖνα.

 

 

12. One who is indignant will be frightened;
one who is gentle will be fearless.

12. 'Ανὴρ θυμώδης πτοηθήσεται,
ὁδὲ πραῢς ἄφοβος ἔσται.

 

 

13. A strong wind chases clouds away;

   brooding on wrongs chases the nous away from knowledge.

13.Ἄνεμος σφοδρὸς ἀποδιώκει νέφη,

μνησικακία δὲ τὸν νοῦν ἀπὸ γνώσεως.

 

 

14. One who prays for enemies will be forgetful of wrongs

   One who uses the tongue sparingly will not cause his neighbor sorrow.

14.Ὁ προσευχόμενος ὑπὲρ ἐχθρῶν ἀμνησίκακος ἔσται,

φειδόμενος δὲ γλώσσης οὐ λυπήσει τὸν πλησίον αὐτοῦ.

 

 

15. If your brother exasperates you,
lead him to your house,

  and do not postpone going to his [home],
but rather eat your morsel with him.

  For by doing this you deliver your soul
and you will have no obstacle at the time of prayer.

15.Ἐαν παροξύνῃ σε ὁ ἀδελφός σου,

εἰσάγαγε αὐτὸν εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου,

καὶ πρὸς αὐτὸν μὴ ὀκνήσῃς εἰσελθεῖν,

ἀλλα' φάγε τὸν ψωμόν σου μετ' αὐτοῦ.

τοῦτο γὰρ ποιῶν ῥύσῃ σὴν ψυχῂν

και οὐκ ἔσται σοι πρόσκομμα ἐν καιρῷ προσευχῆς.

 

 

16. Just as love delights in poverty,
so hatred makes merry in wealth.

16.Ὥσπερ ἡ ἀγάπη χαίρει πενί,

οὕτω τὸ μῖσος τέρπεται πλούτῳ.

 

 

 

 

I7 The rich man will not acquire knowledge and the camel will not enter through the eye of a needle, yet none of these things will be impossible with the Lord.

17. Οὐκ ἐπιτεύξεται πλούσιος γνώσεως

καὶ κάμηλος οὐκ εἰσελεύσεται εἰς ὀπὴν ῥαφίδος,

ἀλλ' οὐδὲν τούτων ἀδυνατήσει παρὰ κυρίῳ.

 

 

18 He who loves money will not see knowledge, and he who amasses it will become dark in himself.

18.Ὁ φιλῶν ἀργύριον οὐκ ὄψεται γνῶσιν,

καὶ ὁ συνάγων αὐτὸ σκοτισθήσεται.

 

 

I9 In the tents of the humble the Lord will make camp, but in the houses of the proud, curses will abound.

19. 'Εν σκηναῖς ταπεινῶν αὐλισθήσεται κύριος,

ἐν οἴκοις δὲ ὑπερηφάνων πληθυνθήσονται ἀραί.

 

 

20 The one who transgresses God's law dishonors him, but he who keeps it glorifies the one who made him.

20.Ἀτιμάζει θεὸν ὁ παραβαίνων νόμον αὐτοῦ,

ὁ δε φυλάσσων αὐτὸν δοξάζει τὸν ποιήσαντα αὐτόν.

 

 

21 If you imitate Christ, you will become blessed. Your soul will die his death, and it will not derive evil from its flesh. lnstead, your exodus will be like the exodus of a star, and your resurrection will glow like the sun.

21.Ἐὰν ζηλώσῃς Χριστόν, γενήσῃ μακαριστός,

τὸν δὲ θάνατον αὐτοῦ ἀποθανεῖται ἡ ψυχή σου,

καί οὐ μὴ ἐπισπάσηται ἀπὸ σαρκὸς αὐτῆς κακίαν,

ἀλλ' ἔσται ἡ ἔξοδός σου ὡς ἔξοδος ἀστέρος,

λαὶ ἡ ἀνάστασίς σου ὥσπερ ὁ ἥλιος ἐκλάμψει.

 

 

22 Woe to a lawless man on the day of his death.

The unjust man will perish at an evil hour.

For as a crow flies away from its nest,

so does the unclean soul from its own body.

22. Οὐαὶ ἀνόμῳ ἐν ἡμέρᾳ θανάτου,

καὶ ἄδικος ὀλεῖται ἐν καιρῳ πονηρῳ.

ὅν τρόπον γάρ ἀφίπταται κόραξ ἐκ τη_ς αὐτοῦ νοσιᾶς,

οὕτως ἀκάθαρτος ψυχὴ ἐκ τοῦἰδίου σώματος.

 

 

23 The souls of the just, angels guide; the souls of the wicked, demons will snatch up.

23. Ψυχὰς δικαίων ὁδηγοῦσιν ἄγγελοι,

ψυχὰς δὲ πονηρῶν παραλήψονται δαίμονες.

 

 

24 Wherever evil enters in, there also ignorance; but the hearts of holy ones will be filled with knowledge.

24. Οὗ ἐὰν εἰσέλθῃ κακία, ἐκεῖ καὶ ἀγνωσία,

καρδίαι δὲ ὁσίων πληρωθήσονται γνώσεως.

 

 

25 The monk who gives no alms will himself be in need, but the one who feeds the poor will inherit treasures.

25.Ἀνελεήμων μοναχοὸς ἐνδεἠς ἔσται,

διατρέφων δὲ πτωχοὺς κληρονομήσει θησαυρούς.

 

 

 

 

26 Better poverty with knowledge than wealth with ignorance.

26. Κρείσσων πενία μετὰ γνώσεως

ἢ πλοῦτος μετὰ ἀγνωσίας.

 

 

 

 

27 An ornament for the head: a crown; an ornament for the heart: knowledge of God.

27. Κόσμος κεφαλῆς στέφανος,

κόσμος δὲ καρδίας γνῶσις θεοῦ.

 

 

 

 

28 Procure knowledge and not silver, and wisdom rather than much wealth.

28. Κτῆσαι γνῶσιν καὶ μὴ ἀργύριον

καὶ σοφίαν ὑπὲρ πλοῦτον πολύν.

 

 

 

 

29 The just will inherit the Lord; the holy ones will be fed by him.

29. Δίκαιοι κληρονομήσουσι κύριον,

ὅσιοι δἐ τραφήσονται ὑπ' αὐτοῦ

 

 

 

30 He who is merciful to the poor destroys irascibility, and he who cares for them will be filled with gocd things.

30.Ὁ ἐλεῶν πένητας διαφθείρει θυμόν,

καὶ ὁ διατρέφων αὐτοὺς πλησθήσεται ἀγαθῶν.

 

 

31 In the gentle heart, wisdom will rest; a throne of passionlessness: a soul accomplished in prattiké.

31.Ἐν καρδίᾳ πραείᾳ ἀναπαύσεται σοφία

θρόνος δὲ ἀπαθείας ψυχὴ πρακτική.

 

 

32 Craftsmen of evils will receive a bad wage, but tO cral`tsmen of good things, a good wage will be given.

32. Τέκτονες πονηρῶν λήψονται μισθὸν κακόν,

τέκτοσι δὲ ἀγαθῶν δοθήσεται μισθὸς ἀγαθός.

 

 

33 The one who lays a trap will himself be caught, and he who hides it will be seized by it.

33.Ὁ τιθεὶς παγίδα συλληφθήσεται ἐν αὐτῇ

καὶ ὁ κρύπτων αὐτὴν ἁλώσεται ὑπ' αὐτῆς.

 

 

34 Better a gentle worldly man than an irascible and wrathful monk.

34. Κρείσσων κοσμικὸς πραῢς

μοναχοῦ θυμώδους καὶ ὀργίλου.

 

 

35 Irascibility scatters knowledge; long-suffering gathers it.

35. Γνῶσιν διασκορπίζει θυμός,

μακροθυμία δὲ συνάγει αὐτήν.

 

 

36 Like a strong south wind on the sea, so is irascibilaty in the heart of a man.

36.Ὥσπερ νότος ἰσχυρὸς ἐν πελάγει

οὕτως θυμὸς ἐν καρδιᾳ ἀνδρός

 

 

37 He who prays unceasingly escapes temptations, but thoughts agitate the heart of the careless one.

37.Ὁ προσευχόμενος συνεχῶς ἐκφεύγει πειρασμούς.

ἀμελοῦντος δὲ καρδίαν ἐκταράσσουσι λογισμοί.

 

 

38 Let not wine gladden you and let not meat make you merry, lest you nourish the flesh of your body and shameful thoughts depart not from you.

38. Μὴ εὐφραινέτω σε οἶνος

καὶ μὴ τερπέτω σε κρέας,

ἵνα μὴ διαθρέψῃς σάρκας σώματός σου,

καὶ λογισμοὶ αἰσχροὶ οὐκ ἐκλείψουσιν ἀπό σου.

 

 

39 Do not say, "Today is a feast and I'm drinking wine," and "tomorrow is Pentecost and I'm eating meat." For there is not feast among monks where a man can fill his stomach.

39. μὴ εἴπῃς· σημερον ἑορτὴ καὶ πίομαι οἶνον,

καὶ αὔριον πεντηκοστὴ καὶ φάγομαι κρέα,

διότι οὐκ ἔστιν ἑορτὴ παρὰ μονοχοῖς

οὐδὲ τὸ πλῆσαι ἄνθρωπον κοιλίαν αὐτοῦ.

40. Pascha of the Lord - passing over from vices; while His Pentecost is resurrection of the soul.

40. Πάσχα κυρίου διάβασις ἀπὸ κακίας,

πεντηκοστὴ δὲ αὐτοῦ ἀμαστασις ψυχῆς.

41. Festal celebration of God - forgetfulness of vices; one who remembers wrongs, will be grasped by sorrow.

41.Ἑορτὴ θεοῦ ἀμνηστία κακῶν,

τὸν δὲ μνησικακοῦντα λήψονται πένθη.

42. Pentecost of the Lord - resurrection of love; while who hates his brother will fall very deeply.

42. Πεντηκοστὴ κυρίου ἀνάστασις ἀγάπης,

ὁ δὲ μισῶν τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ πεσαῖται πτῶμα ἐξαίσιον.

43. Festal celebration of God - true knowledge; while one who clings to false knowledge will end shamefully.

43.Ἑορτὴ θεοῦ γνῶσις ἀληθής,

ὁ δὲ προσέχων γνώσει ψευδεῖ τελευτήσει αἰσχρως.

 

 

44 Better a fast with a pure heart than a feast in impurity of soul.

44. Κρείσσων νηστεία μετὰ καθαρᾶς καρδίας

ὑπἐρ ἑορτὴν ἐν ἀκαθαρσίᾳ ψυχῇς.

 

 

45 He who completely destroys evil thoughts in his heart, he is like the one who dashes his children against the rock.

45.Ὁ διαφθείρων λογισμοὺς κακοὺς ἀπὸ καρδίας αὐτοῦ

[p. 157] ὅμοιός ἐστι τῷ ἐδαφίζοντι τὰ νήπια αὐτοῦ πρὸς τὴν πέτραν.

 

 

46 The sleepy monk will fall into evils, but the vigilant one, like a sparrow shall he be.

46. Μοναχὸς ὑπνώδης ἐμπεσεῖται εἰς κακά,

ὁ δὲ ἀγρυπνῶν ὡς στρουθι

 

 

47 Do not give yourself during a vigil to empty stories, and do not reject spiritual reasons; for the Lord inspects your soul, and he will not fail to punish you for every evil.

47. Μὴ δς σεαυτὸν ἐν ἀγρυπνίᾳ διηγήμασι κενοῖς

καὶ μὴ ἀπώσῃ λόγους πνευματικούς,

ὅτι κύριος σκοπεύει σὴν ψυχὴν

καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀθωώσῃ σε ἀπὸ παντὸς κακοῦ.

 

 

48 Much sleep thickens thought, while a good vigil hones it fine.

48.Ὕπνος πολὺς παχύνει διάνοιαν,

ἀγρυπνόα δὲ ἀγαθὴ λεπτύνει αὐτήν.

 

 

49 Much sleep leads on temptations, but these the vigilant one will flee.

49.Ὕπνος πολὺς ἐπάγει πειρασμούς,

ὁ δὲ ἀγρυπνῶν ἐκφεύξεται αὐτούς.

 

 

50 As fire melts wax, so the good vigil, evil thoughts.

 

50.Ὥσπερ πῦρ τήκει κηρόν,

οὕτως ἀγρυπνία ἀγθὴ λογισμοὺς πονηρούς.

 

 

51 Better a man lying down to sleep than a monk keeping vigil with idle thoughts.

Κρείσσων ἀνὴρ καθεύδων

ἤ μοναχὸς ἀγρυπνῶν περὶ λογισμοὺς ματαίους.

52

 

52. An angelic dream rejoices the heart; while a demonic dream disturbs it.

52.Ἐνύπνιον ἀγγελικὸν εὐ̓φραίνει καρδίαν,

ἐνύπνιον δὲ δαιμονιῶδες ἐκταράσσει αὐτήν.

 

 

53 Conversion and humility have set the soul up; compassion and gentleness have made it firm.

53. Μετ́νοια καὶ ταπείνωσις ἀνώρθωσαν ψυχήν,

ἐλεημοσύνη δὲ καὶ πραΰτης ἐστήριξαν αὐτήν.

 

 

54 In all things remember your exodus, and do not forget the eternal judgment, and there will be no transgression in your soul.

54. Μεμνησο διὰ παντὸς σῆς ἐχόδου

καὶ μὴ ἐπιλάθῃ κρίσεως αἰωνίας,

καὶ οὐκ ἔσται πλημμέλεια ἐν ψυχῇ σου.

 

 

55 If the spirit of listlessness mounts yous do not leave your house; and do not turn aside in that hour from profitable wrestling. For like someone making money shine, so will your heart be made to glow.

55.Ἐὰν πνεῦμα ἀκηδίας ἀναβῇ ἐπί σε, οἶκόν σου μὴ ἀφῇς

καὶ μὴ ἐκκλίνῃς ἐν καιρῷ πάλην ἀπωφελῆ.

ὃν τρόπον γὰρ εἴ τις λευκάνοι ἄργυρον,

οὕτως λαμπρυνθήσεται ἡ καρδία σου.

 

 

56 The spirit of listlessness drives away tears and the spirit of sadness shatters prayer.

56. πνευμα ἀκηδίας ἀπελαύνει δάκρυα,

πνεῦμα δὲ λύπης συντρίβει προσευχήν.

 

 

57 Desiring riches, you will be divided by care; and cleaving to them, bitterly shall you mourn.

57.Ἐπιθυμῶν χρημάτων μεριμνήσεις πολλά,

καὶ ἀντεχόμενος αὐτῶν πενθήσεις πικρῶς.

 

 

58 Do not let a scorpion linger on your breast, nor in your heart an evil thought.

58. μὴ χρονιζέτω σκορπίος ἐν κόλπῳ σου

καὶ λογισμὸς πονερὸς ἐν καρδίᾳ σου.

 

 

59 Do not fail to kill the offspring of serpents, and you will not go into labor with the thoughts of their heart.

59. Κτείνειν γεννήματα ὀφέων μὴ φείσῃ,

καὶ μὴ ὠδίνῃς λογισμοὐς καρδίας αὐτῶν.

 

 

60 As fire tests silver and gold, so temptations, the heart of a monk.

60.Ὥσπερ ἀργύριον καὶ χρυσίον δοκιμάζει πῦρ,

οὕτως καρδίαν μοναχοῦ πειρασμοί.

 

 

61 Strip down pride from yourself and put vainglory far away from you. For the one who does not obtain glory will be sad, and the one who does obtain it will be proud.

61. Περίελε σεαυτοῦ ὑπερηφανίαν

καὶ κενοδοξίαν μακρὰ ποίησον ἀπό σου.

ὁ γὰρ ἀποτυχὼν δόξης λυπηθήσεται,

ὁ δὲ ἐπιτυχὼν ὑπερήφανος ἔσται.

 

 

62 Do not give your heart to pride and do not say before the face of God ' Powerful am I"; lest the Lord abandon your soul and evil demons bring it low. For then the enemies will flutter around you through the air, and fearful nights will follow you.

62. Μὴ δῷς ὑπερηφανίᾳ σὴν ψυχήν,

καὶ πονηροὶ δαίμονες ταπεινώσουσιν αὐτήν.

τότε γάρ σε δι' ἀέρος πτοήσουσιν οἱ ἐχθροί,

νύκτες δὲ φοβεραὶ διαδέξονταί σε.

 

 

63 Knowledge keeps guard over a monk's way of life; but he who descends from knowledge will fall among thieves.

63. Πολιτείαν μοναχοῦ διαφυλάττε γνῶσις,

ὁ δὲ καταβαίνων ἀπὸ γνώσεως περιπεσεῖται λῃσταῖς.

 

 

64 From the spiritual rock, a river flows; a soul accomplished in praktité drinks from it.

64.Ἐκ πέτρας πνευματικῆς ἀπορρεῖ ποταμός,

ψυχὴ δὲ πρακτικὴ πίεται ἀπ' αὐτοῦ.

 

 

65 A vessel of election, the pure soul; but the impure soul will be filled with bitterness.

65. Σκεῦος ἐκλογῆς ψυχχὴ καθαρά,

ἡ δὲ ἀκάθαρτος πλῃσθήσεται πικρίας.

 

 

66 Without milk, a child is not nourished, and apart from passionlessness, a heart will not be raised up.

66.Ἄνευ γάλακτος οὐ τραφῃσεται παιδίον,

καί χωρὶς ἀπαθείας οὐχ ὑψωθήσεται καρδία.

 

 

67 In front of love, passionlessness marches; in front of knowledge, love.

67. Πρὸ ἀγάπης ἡγεῖται ἀπάθεια

πρὸ δὲ γνώσεως ἀγάπη.

 

 

68 To knowledge, wisdom is added; prudence gives birth to passionlessness.

68. Γνώσει προστίθεται σοφία,

ἀπάθειαν δὲ τίκτει φρόνησις.

 

 

69 Fear of the Lord begets prudence; faith in Christ bestows fear of God.

69. Φόβος κυρίου γεννᾷ φρόνησιν,

πίστις δὲ Χριτσοῦ δωρεῖται φόβον θεοῦ.

 

 

70 A flaming arrow ignites the soul, but the man of praktiké will extinguish it

70. Βέλος πεπυρωμένον ἀνάπτει ψυχήν,

ἀνὴρ δὲ πρακτικὸς κατασβέσει αὐτό.

 

 

71 Clamor and blasphemy, knowledge turns aside; cunning words, wisdom flees.

71. Κραυγὴν καὶ βλασφημίαν ἀποστρέφεται γνῶσις,

λόγους δὲ δολίους φεύγει σοφία.

 

 

72 Sweet is honey, its comb a delight; but sweeter than both is the knowledge of God.

̔Ηδὺ μέλι καὶ γλυκὺ κηρίον,

γνῶσις δὲ θεοῦ γλυκυτέρα ἀμφοτέρων.

 

 

73 Listen, O monk, to the words of your father, and do not make his admonitions something powerless in you. Whenever he sends you, take him along; and travel with him in thinking. For in this way you will flee bad thoughts, and evil demons will not prevail over you.

If he entrusts silver to you, do not throw it around; and if you earn some, give it away.

73.Ἄκουε, μοναχέ, λόγους πατρός σου

καὶ μὴ ἀκύρους ποίει νουθεσίας αὐτοῦ.
̔Ηνικα ἂν ἀποστείλῃ σε, ἐπάγου αὐτὸν

καὶ κατὰ διάνοιαν συνόδευε αὐτῷ.

τούτῳ γὰρ τῷ τρόπῳ διαφεύξῃ λογισμοὺς κακούς,

καὶ πονηροὶ δαίμονες οὐκ ἰσχύσουσι κατά σου.

ἐὰν πιστεύσῃ σοι ἀργύριον, οὐ διασκορπιεῖς αὐτό,

καὶ κἂν ἀπεργάσῃ, ἀποδώσεις αὐτό.

 

 

74 An evil steward will squeeze the souls of the brethren, and the one who remembers injuries will not pity them.

74. Πονερὸς οἰκονόμος ἐκθλίψει ψυχὰς ἀδελφῶν,

καὶ μνησίκακος οὐκ ἐλεήσει αὐτας.

 

 

75 The one who wastes the goods of the monastery wrongs God, and the one careless of them will not go unpunished .

31. In a gentle heart wisdom will find a resting place; a throne of impassibility is the soul accomplished in the practical life.

32. The artisans of wicked deeds will receive an evil reward; to the artisans of good deeds will be given a good reward (cf. Prov. 14: 22).5

33. One who sets a trap will be caught in it; one who conceals it will get snared by it.

34. Better a gentle secular than an irascible and angry monk. 3 5. Irascibility disperses knowledge; patience gathers it.

36. Like a strong south wind on the sea, so irascibility in a person’s heart.

37. One who prays without ceasing escapes temptations; but thoughts trouble the heart of the negligent.

38. Let not wine be your cheer, nor meat your delight, lest you nourish the flesh of your body and shameful thoughts will not leave you alone.

39. Do not say, ‘Today is the Feast (Easter)6 and I can drink wine,’ or, ‘Tomorrow is Pentecost and I can eat meat,’ for it is not a feast day for monks on earth, nor may a person fill his belly.

(p.125) 40. Passover of the Lord, a passage from evil; his Pentecost, resurrection of the soul.

41. Feast of God, amnesty for evil deeds;7 but sorrows will seize hold of one who harbours resentment.

42. Pentecost of the Lord, resurrection of love; but one who hates his brother will suffer a grievous fall.

43. Feast of God, true knowledge; but one who pays heed to false knowledge will come to a shameful end.

44. Better a fast with a pure heart than a feast celebrated in impurity of soul.

45. One who eradicates evil thoughts from his heart is like the one who dashed his little ones against the rock (Ps. 136: 9).8

46. A drowsy monk will fall into evils; the vigilant one will be like a sparrow (Ps. 101: 8).9

47. Do not give yourself to empty stories during vigil10 and do not reject spiritual words, for the Lord examines your soul, but he will not hold you innocent for every evil.

48. Much sleep thickens the intellect; goodly vigil refines it.

49. Much sleep brings on temptations; one who keeps vigil escapes them.

50. As fire melts wax, so goodly vigil melts wicked thoughts.

51. Better a person asleep than a monk at vigil over vain thoughts.

52. An angelic dream gladdens the heart; a demonic dream troubles it.

53. Repentance and humility restore the soul; compassion and gentleness strengthen it.

54. Remember always your departure from life and forget not the eternal judgement, and there will be no fault in your soul.11

55. If the spirit of acedia comes over you, do not leave your dwelling (cf. Eccles. 10: 4) or avoid a worthwhile contest at an opportune moment, for in the same way that one might polish silver, so will your heart be made to shine.

56. The spirit of acedia drives away tears; the spirit of sadness crushes prayer.

(p.126) 57. If you desire riches you will have many worries; if you hold onto them you will experience bitter sorrows.

58. Do not let a scorpion stay in a fold of your garment, nor a wicked thought in your heart.12

59. Do not refrain from killing the offspring of serpents and do not be pained over the thoughts of their heart.

60. As fire tests silver and gold (cf. Prov. 17: 3),13 so temptations test the heart of a monk.

61. Eliminate pride from yourself and set vainglory far from you, for one who fails to attain esteem will experience sadness and one who attains it will be prideful.

62. Give not your heart to pride and say not before the face of God, Ί am able’, lest the Lord abandon your soul and the wicked demons humiliate it; for then the enemies will terrify you through the air and frightful nights will come to you one after the other.14

63. Knowledge watches over the monk’s way of life; one who descends from knowledge falls prey to thieves (cf. Luke 10: 30).15

64. From the spiritual rock there flows a stream (1 Cor. 10: 4); the soul engaged in the practical life will drink from it.

65. A vessel of election (Acts 9: 15) is the pure soul; but the impure soul will be filled with bitterness.16

66. Without milk a child cannot be fed (cf. Heb. 5: 12–14; 1 Cor. 3: 1–3); without impassibility the heart cannot be raised to the heights.17

67. Before love impassibility leads the way; before knowledge love.

68. Wisdom is added to knowledge; prudence gives birth to impassibility.18

69. The fear of the Lord begets prudence; faith in Christ bestows the fear of God.

70. A flaming arrow ignites the soul; a person accomplished in the practical life will extinguish it (cf. Eph. 6:16).19

71. Knowledge turns away clamour and blasphemy; wisdom flees deceitful words.

(p.127) 72. Pleasant is honey and sweet the honeycomb; the knowledge of God is sweeter than both.20

73. Hear, O monk, the words of your father and treat not his counsels as having no authority (cf. Prov. 5:7). Whenever he sends you away, bring him along and in your mind walk the path with him (cf. Prov. 6: 22), for in this way you will escape evil thoughts and the wicked demons will not prevail against you. If he entrusts you with money, you shall not squander it, and when you have laboured further with it, you shall give it back.

74. A wicked steward will oppress the souls of the brothers; a resentful one will show them no mercy.

75. One who squanders the goods of the monastery offends God; one who is negligent with them will not go unpunished.

76. An unjust steward will distribute badly; the just one will give with respect to merit.21

77. One who maligns his brother will come to complete ruin; one who neglects the sick will not see the light.

78. Better a secular serving his brother in sickness than an anchorite who shows no pity for his neighbour.

79. The foolish monk neglects the tools of his art; the prudent one takes care of them.

80. Do not say, ‘Today I will stay and tomorrow I will go out’, because you have not considered this prudently.

81. The wandering monk will take false sayings for his meditation; he will deal deceitfully with his own father.22

82. One who adorns his clothing and fills his stomach shepherds shameful thoughts and with the chaste he keeps no company.23

83. If you enter a village, do not approach women and do not spend time in conversations with them, for in the same way that someone might swallow a hook so will your soul be dragged away.24

84. A patient monk will be loved, but one who provokes his brothers will be hated.

85. The Lord loves the gentle monk, but the insolent one he will thrust from himself.

(p.128) 86. The lazy monk will grumble much; the drowsy one will use his headache as an excuse.25

87. If your brother is grieved comfort him, and if he is in pain share his suffering, for in doing this you will gladden his heart and amass a great treasure in heaven.

88. The monk who is deficient in keeping the words of his father will speak irreverently of the grey hairs of the one who begot him and he will malign the lives of his sons, but the Lord will treat him with contempt.

89. One who looks for excuses separates himself from the brothers and he will accuse his own father (cf. Prov. 18: 1).

90. Give no hearing to words uttered against your father and do not encourage the soul of one who dishonours him, lest the Lord be angry at your deeds and expunge your name from the book of the living (cf. Ps. 68: 29).26

91. One who obeys his own father loves himself, but one who contradicts him will fall into evils.

92. Blessed is the monk who keeps the commandments of the Lord; holy is the one who observes the words of his fathers.

93. The lazy monk will be abundantly punished (cf. Prov. 19: 19); if he is encouraged, he will hand over his habit as well.

94. One who guards his tongue makes straight his paths (cf. Prov. 3: 6; 11: 5); one who keeps watch over his heart (cf. Prov. 4: 2 3) will be filled with knowledge.

95. The deceitful monk troubles his brothers; the faithful one brings tranquillity (cf. Prov. 11: 12–13).

96. One who has placed his trust in his own abstinence will fall; he who humbles himself will be exalted.27

97. Do not give yourself to feeding your belly (Prov. 24: 15) and take not your fill of nightly sleep, for in this way you will become pure and the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you (cf. Luke 1: 35).

98. When one practises psalmody, the irascible part attains stillness; and when one practises patience, it will be free of terrors.

99. From gentleness knowledge is born; from insolence ignorance.

(p.129) 100. As water makes a plant grow, so the humbling of the irascible part exalts the heart.

101. The lamp of one who searches out banquets will be extinguished (cf. Prov. 23: 30, 24: 20); his soul will see darkness.

102. Weigh your bread in a balance and drink your water by measure (cf. Ezek. 4:10–11); then the spirit of fornication will flee from you.

103. Give wine to the elderly and offer food to the sick, because they wore out the flesh in their youth.

104. Do not trip up your brother and do not rejoice over a fall of his, for the Lord knows your heart and will hand you over on the day of your death.

105. The prudent monk will be impassible; the foolish one will spill out evils.

106. The eye of the wicked the Lord will blind; the eye of the simple he will rescue from darkness.

107. As the morning star in heaven and the palm tree in paradise, so is the pure mind in a gentle soul.28

108. A wise person will pore over the words of God, the foolish person will deride them.29

109. One who hates the knowledge of God and rejects the contemplation of him is like one who pierces his own heart with a lance.

110. Better is knowledge of the Trinity than knowledge of the incorporeals, and the contemplation of the Trinity than the reasons of all the ages.

111. The grey hair of elders, gentleness; their life, knowledge of the truth.

112. A gentle young person bears many things; but who will bear the pettiness of an elder. I saw an irate elder exalted in his time; the young person however had more hope than he.

113. One who gives scandal to seculars will not go unpunished; one who provokes them dishonours his name.

114. Fire shall consume one who troubles the church of the Lord; the earth shall swallow one who sets himself against a priest.

(p.130) 115. One who loves honey eats its honeycomb; one who gathers it shall be filled with honey.30

116. Honour the Lord and you shall know the reasons of the incorporeals; serve him and he will show you the reasons of the ages.

117. Without knowledge the heart shall not be exalted; a tree will not flourish without water.

118. Flesh of Christ, the practical virtues; one who eats of it shall become impassible.

119. Blood of Christ, contemplation of beings; one who drinks it will receive wisdom from him.31

120. Breast of the Lord, knowledge of God; one who reclines on it (cf. John 1 3: 2 5; 21: 20) will be endowed with theology.32

121. A person accomplished in the gnostic life and one accomplished in the practical life met each other; between the two of them stood the Lord.

122. One who has acquired love has acquired a treasure; he has received a grace from the Lord.

123. Wisdom knows the teachings of the demons; prudence searches out their maleficence.

124. Do not spurn the holy teachings which your fathers laid down; do not abandon the faith of your baptism and do not reject the spiritual seal, that the Lord may be with your soul and protect you on an evil day.33

125. Words of heretics, angels of death; one who welcomes them will lose his own soul.

126. Now then, my son, listen to me. Do not approach the doors of the lawless, nor walk near their snares, lest you be caught. Keep your soul from false knowledge, for I have often spoken with them and I have searched out their dark words and found in them the poison of asps (cf. Ps. 13: 3; 1 39: 4). There is no prudence, no wisdomin their words; all who welcome them will perish; those who love them will be filled with evils. I saw the fathers of their teachings and in the desert I conferred with them. The enemies of the Lord met with me and in their words the demons contested with me and I did not see the true light in their sayings.34

127. A person deceived will fall away from the Lord; one who deceives his neighbour will fall victim to evils.

(p.131) 128. Better the paradise of God than a garden of vegetables; the river of God than the great river that obscures the earth (Deut. 11: 10–11).35

129. More trustworthy the water of heaven than the water of the Egyptian sages who drew it from the earth (Deut. 11: 10–11).

130. In the same way that those who mount the wheels go downwards, so those who exalt their words are humbled in them.

131. The wisdom of the Lord exalts the heart; his prudence purifies it.

132. The reasons of providence are obscure and the contemplations of judgement are difficult to understand, but the one accomplished in the practical life will know them.36

133. One who purifies himself will see the intellectual natures; the gentle monk will know the reasons of the incorporeals.

134. One who calls the Holy Trinity a creature blasphemes against God; one who denies his Christ will not know him.

135. Contemplations of the worlds expand the heart; the reasons of providence and judgement exalt it.

136. Knowledge of the incorporeals raises the mind on high and presents it to the Holy Trinity.

137. Remember the one who gave you in the Lord clear proverbs and do not forget my humble soul in the time of prayer.
